Cryptanthus ‘Elaine’ | Earth Star Bromeliad | Established Plant | 4” Nursery Pot
🌿 Wyrd Plant Co. Care Card
🌞 Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Strong filtered light helps Cryptanthus ‘Elaine’ maintain its rich coloration and bold foliage pattern. It can tolerate medium indirect light, but lower light may result in less vibrant color. Avoid prolonged direct afternoon sun.
💧 Water: Water when the top 1 inch of soil begins to feel dry. Keep the growing medium lightly moist but never waterlogged. Unlike many bromeliads, Cryptanthus grows terrestrially and should be watered primarily through the soil rather than relying on water held in a central cup.
💦 Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity, ideally 50% or higher. It adapts to average household humidity but appreciates additional humidity when paired with good airflow.
🌡️ Temperature: Thrives between 65 and 85°F (18 to 29°C). Protect from temperatures below 60°F, cold drafts, and sudden temperature changes.
🌱 Soil: A loose, airy, well-draining mix is ideal. A blend containing quality potting soil, perlite, fine orchid bark, and horticultural charcoal provides good drainage while retaining enough moisture for healthy growth.
🌿 Fertilizer: Feed lightly every 4 to 6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to quarter or half strength. Cryptanthus are light feeders, so avoid overfertilizing.
🐾 Pet Safety: Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a great addition to pet-friendly plant collections.
🌎 Difficulty: Easy
🌿 About This Plant
Cryptanthus ‘Elaine’, commonly known as an Earth Star Bromeliad, is a compact tropical plant prized for its dramatic star-shaped rosette and richly colored foliage. Its low-growing leaves radiate outward from the center, creating the distinctive flattened “earth star” appearance that gives this group of bromeliads its name.
Unlike many familiar bromeliads that grow as epiphytes in trees, Cryptanthus are terrestrial bromeliads that naturally grow along the forest floor. Their compact size and bold foliage make them especially well suited for shelves, desktops, mixed tropical displays, and humid growing environments.
As a mature Earth Star completes its life cycle, it may produce offsets, commonly called pups, around the base. These can eventually develop into new plants, allowing a single established Cryptanthus to become the beginning of an entire little colony.
